in vitro studies
Kartogenin induced hMSCs to differentiate into chondrocytes and protected articular chondrocytes by enhancing CBFβ nuclear localization. Kartogenin promotes type I collagen synthesis of dermal fibroblasts by activating the smad4/smad5 pathway without significant cytotoxicity to the activity, morphology and survival of fibroblasts.
In vivo studies
In mouse models of OA caused by collagenase VII (10 μM)-and surgical (100 μM)-Kartogenin promote cartilage repair. Kartogenin (100 nM) also stimulates collagen synthesis in mouse dermis. In addition, Kartogenin stimulated bone growth and synovial joint development in mouse limbs.
